Welcome to the Alaska State Museum New Acquisitions Blog. With the launching of this blog, we hope to keep the public, both in Alaska and throughout the world informed of the Alaska State Museums ongoing efforts to collect and preserve Alaska’s amazing and diverse histories. A major part of what we hope to share and communicate is the “what and how” of the museums collecting processes. The “what” consists of the amazingly diverse and complex variety of art and artifacts that are utilized to tell Alaska’s story; the many peoples, cultures, and ways of “being Alaskan” are documented, preserved and shared through the museum’s collections. The “how” will consist of a behind the scenes look into the collecting process, including how objects are sought and selected, the ways in which staff gather historical/cultural data on the objects, and how the museum creates linkages between the collections and the communities they represent.
We hope you thoroughly enjoy this effort and we welcome any and all comments, suggestion and inquiries about this blog and/or any of the amazing art and artifacts in the collection.
Cheers!
